Ping Pong's Puppet Workshop

February, 2006

Part two of the River Otter construction for the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.

Applying the fur

Here, the fur and the nose are being applied over the papier maché, over the clay.

All of the fur is now cut and shaped to fit the head. The eyes and mouth still have to be cut out, but the shape of the fur is finished.

Removing the papier maché

Now it's time to remove the papier maché. As you can see by the gouges in the clay, it did not come easily. We ended up cutting it into eight pieces to get it off.

Here's the pieces of the papier maché.

Glueing the head back together

Now we have to glue the pieces of the head back together.

Otter head & bicycle helmet

The final layer of papier maché on the outside of the head, with the eye holes and mouth cut out. Next to the head is the bicycle helmet which will go inside the Otter head and rest atop the human wearer' s head.

Steve wearing the head

This will give you some idea of how the Otter head will look when the rest of the costume is finished.
